Interesting little tid bit about the origin of enclosures. In the late 12th century, King Richard put the crown of England in hawk to the various aristocrats of Europe to fund his crusades that he led on behalf of the Italian merchant and ruling class and the church, whose senior officials were all sons of those families. He died in battle on his way back to England in 1198, leaving his younger brother, John, in charge. John started raising taxes to pay off the loans, but in doing so, impoverished the peasants, put them at odds with the lords, and ended up not being able to pay off the loans anyway. In 1215, the king had a standoff with his creditors, leading to the famous meeting at Runnymede. A deal was brokered which put the church as a buffer, but at the cost of the crown being eternally in debt to the church. This left the crown needing to set up a means to perpetually collect taxes, so they created the magna carta, or great charter. With this document, they took the rights that had belonged to every man and reserved them for the aristocrats, which would give them various options for raising funds by stealing them from the people. It is hilarious how, nearly a thousand years later, this is still presented as some great step forward for humanity. It paved the way for the Acts of Merton, of 1235, twenty years later, which laid the initial groundwork for enclosures. Basically, the acts allowed the aristocrats to claim the common land for their own, with the blessing of the crown and church, and begin charging rents. While true enclosures did not become common until later, beginning with Henry VIII, the legal framework was already set.

It is so cool to see the threads of history being exposed here to demonstrate how ancient these institutions are, and how they are not something that just arises out of nature, but things that were created by people for a purpose, and have been carried forward to maintain the ruse.
