I would modify one thing: there still are a cohort of Leftist people who believe that all the things you listed (15 minute cities et. al.) are good, but they are too stupid for their own good, and they are the useful idiots that enable the billionaire “leftists” to do what they do. Michael Moore falls into this category along with everyone alive who actually votes for democrats.

I’m so mad that this went into my junk box (I have no idea why as I receive your other emails) as this is brilliant. You have articulated the random thoughts in my head. I would like to add if I may, to the reasons why the left abandoned itself and it connects to your third point where you mention that the authoritarian tendencies were already there. I absolutely believe this, as it is something that I saw while mixing with the authoritarian left. I made a quote a while back that, “we should be mindful that people don’t want to dismantle power, they want to replace it.” I saw how they adopted the values of conservatives (individualism) while larping as “leftists.” I saw the exclusion of the low income & working class, while using [us] when it was convenient for them (like to show how much they are giving back). Also their goal is to be in a position of power so that they could bully/boss others around because dominating makes them feel better. There was no space or grace for others except those who were a part of their little cliques. I could go on & on about this and maybe I should write about it properly, but too many people have unprocessed issues so they become unkind and cruel people. While on my own journey of healing from childhood trauma, I shared that there is no point of socialism or a different system if we don’t do the inner work, because if you give someone with unprocessed issues power, they will turn into the devil; the Milgram experiments showed us that, as did the mask harassment.
I should add that no one on the left seems to object to this state of affairs. No one on the left objects to the fact that all things public health, climate, BLM, and trans are driven by billionaires with their own interests and agendas. In a former era this would have set off shrieks of protest about selling out. But now that there is no actually existing left, I guess no one is still around who might object to this takeover of the movement by the oligarchs.
Great Decomposition. As others have noted, does miss some props that were critical to making this possible; an orange man to trigger and divide the world. This was imperative for segregation. Moreover, the same algorithms that are used for corpus segregation and classification are the same algorithms being used on us. I first had this premonition designing content filters nearly 20 years ago after A Plan For Spam was first published. If I was able to conceive sorting and classification algorithms being used on people so could others — they were the seeds sown in what is a weaponized social media today. We can grow up having watched the cartoons Pinky and the Brain and sing the songs of Tears for Fears and still not see it.
There is a much more mundane explanation for what happened - the left have experienced "gentrification". The leftists from 68 became middle class professionals and kicked out the economic values of the left like looking after the working class. All the movement is today are bourgeois elites pushing their feel-good ideology and receiving the benefits thereof - while those pushed-on get all the costs. What encouraged me to attain such educational endeavors? The idea of what America was then when I was a young man and also being told that anything was possible if I was willing to work hard!
