The church committed grave sins during Covid, just like the rest of society. And there needs to be a reckoning within the church just as there needs to be a reckoning within civil society. I know that's slight different than what I said/wrote above. I would just say that there were some good religious leaders during Covid (Father Naugle and Rob McCoy come to mind). And we should elevate them and include them in the accountability project.

When the government says, “get vaccinated because you have a moral duty to sacrifice your own self interest for the benefit of your fellow man,” that’s altruism. Altruism is a Christian doctrine that preaches that man has no right to live for his own sake; that his moral duty is to deny his own life for the needs of others. (Eg., sell your possessions and give to the poor, or, wash your servant’s feet, or, forgive other’s debts). Likewise, when the government implicitly acknowledges that some may be harmed getting a vaccine, for example, so that the many may live, that’s utilitarianism. Utilitarianism is also a Christian doctrine that claims that what is “good” for society is equivalent to what is “good” for the greatest number of people. So, for example, when Christians preach that “Jesus gave his life, a ransom for many,” that’s, in principle, utilitarianism. Whether one agrees with these doctrines or not, they should always be relegated to the private affairs of individuals who choose for themselves to follow those them at their own expense. The government has absolutely no business taking up the mantel of the Church or any religious institution in order to enforce or coerce a policy preference. Moreover, even the faithful must be careful not to impose their religious ethics on others in an otherwise free country that forbids the establishment of religion.
